Kimbo Slice to Face James Thompson On CBS/EliteXC Saturday Night Fights Debut Card

James Thompson to Fight Kimbo SliceKimbo Slice’s opponent for EliteXC’s primetime network television debut on CBS is expected to be officially announced later this week by EliteXC. Mike Chiappetta of has learned Kimbo’s opponent will be James Thompson.

Kimbo and Thompson both competed on EliteXC’s Street Certified card on Feb. 16. Kimbo grabbed the second victory of his professional MMA career against UFC pioneer Tank Abbott with a quick first round TKO. Conversely, Thompson was on the receiving end of Brett Roger’s blows, and was knocked out in the first round.

If all goes as planned, this fight should end just like their last respective matches, with Kimbo knocking Thompson out in the first round. For those not familiar with Thompson, he is notorious for his highly aggressive style. He likes to rush his opponents at the opening bell and start swinging. At the beginning of the Rogers match he opted for the bull rush into an immediate takedown, which was a departure from his typical opening approach. The change in tactic might have been due to his training with Xtreme Couture, which has emerged as one of the premier fight camps in the sport. Undoubtedly he is learning ways to adapt his fighting style. However, his glaring weakness is his chin, and Kimbo will be looking to take advantage of it.

This video pretty much sums up what James Thompson has been about up to this point in his career:

Like everyone else, I don’t give Thompson much of a chance in this one. Kimbo hits like a Mack Truck and Thompson has a glass jaw. You do the math. Thompson’s best chance is get Kimbo to the ground. Kimbo has yet to be tested there, and it will be interesting to see what happens if that’s where the fight ends up.

Regardless of how predictable this fight is, I think the EliteXC match makers did a good job here. They want to ensure they have an exciting main event headlining their already-entertaining card. Hardcore fans won’t get much out of it, but the guaranteed action of this bout should be enough to get the casual fans and first-time viewers to come back for CBS/EliteXC Saturday Night Fights Round 2.
