Phil Baroni Hungry For A ‘Smokin Joe Burrito’

Phil ‘The New York Bad Ass’ Baroni is nothing if not entertaining. He might not win all his fights, but he always makes them exciting. Just look to his last two fights against Frank Shamrock and Kala Hose. He happens to be just as entertaining out of the ring as he is inside it. A lot of fellow fighters say he’s just a normal guy day to day and turns on the bravado in front of the cameras and behind the microphone. Well, in’s latest interview it appears Phil Baroni is back again discussing Joey Villasenor replacing Murilo ‘Ninja’ Rua for his upcoming bout on CBS at EliteXC: Primetime.

Here are a few excerpts:

Ariel Helwani: What was the reason you heard [Ninja pulled out of the fight]?

Phil Baroni: He was injured or something. Really what difference does it make? Whatever the reason is he should consider himself lucky. I’ll be coming in top shape for this one guns blazing.

Ariel Helwani: Is it possible he read our interview on and got scared?

Phil Baroni: I doubt he can even read.

In Phil’s defense, Rua is from Brazil and speaks Brazilian Portuguese. He doesn’t speak English, to my knowledge. Of course, Phil had to make it sound like Rua is illiterate. Nice one.

Ariel Helwani: What are your thoughts on your new opponent on May 31st, Joey Villasenor?

Phil Baroni: Instead of Ninja Sushi I’ll be having a Smoking Joe Burrito.

That’s sounds like it was straight out of a WWE interview.

Ariel Helwani: After our interview was posted, a lot of MMA fans were a tad critical of you saying you talk too much trash. Care to respond?

Phil Baroni: Don’t listen!

Simple enough. The interview Ariel is referring to is much more over the top than this one.

Baroni certainly does a good job of getting fans to root for the other fighter. However, that’s a lot better than fans not caring about him at all. And that’s why, despite two losses in a row, he will fight on the national stage come May 31.
