Yesterday, we passed along news that Donald Trump would be holding a press conference tomorrow, June 5, to formally announce a partnership with Affliction’s MMA promotion. MMARated.com has been able to get the inside scoop on some of the details expected to be announced, and they include the signing of former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski.
Donald Trump will be announcing that former UFC heavyweight champion, Andrei Arlovski, has officially signed with the upstart promotion. The Executive Vice President of The Trump Organization and the Special Counsel to Donald J. Trump, Michael D. Cohen, confirmed the news with MMARated.com.
Trump will also announce that he has become an equity partner in the Affliction promotion. When asked what percentage of the organization he now owns, Mr. Cohen would only say “a significant amount.”
“Everything that Donald Trump does is the biggest and the best and the “Afflcition: Banned” show will be just that.
Due to the status of the Trump mark, and Donald Trump as a mogul business man, Mr. Trump has received dozens of phone calls from fighters who are interested in joining the Affliction family.”
Arlovski signing with Affliction would put speculation to rest that he had signed with Adrenaline MMA after appearing on their website and promotional materials for a meet-and-greet, although this doesn’t mean there isn’t some sort of deal worked out between the promotions. Regardless, as it has been all but officially confirmed by Affliction, Arlovski should be competing at Affliction’s July 19 event, “Banned,” against IFL Heavyweight standout Ben Rothwell.
Affliction is definitely shooting for the stars and having the notoriously ruthless business mogul Donald Trump with an equity stake in your corner definitely show that they’re not messing around. Trump is not a man that likes to fail so I would expect them to pull out all the stops to ensure the promotion is a success. However, they are going to have to secure some kind of a TV deal in order to achieve that. Like I said in the previous post, Trump has ties with NBC, so one has to wonder if discussions aren’t already taking place there.
I sincerely hope Affliction proves all of us that have ever doubted them wrong. With this news, I believe they now have a chance.
Affliction will run its first MMA event, “Banned,” on July 19 at The Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The event will be available on pay-per-view and will feature the return of Fedor Emelianenko, the number one heavyweight in the world and former PRIDE Heavyweight Champion, to the US to face former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Tim Sylvia, in the main event. The star-studded fight card can be found in our fight cards section.
