According to Hayato ‘Mach’ Sakurai’s personal blog, he and Nick Diaz, who were originally scheduled to hook it up for the DREAM Welterweight Championship at DREAM.5, will now fight at DREAM.6 instead. Diaz was pulled out of the DREAM.5 bout by EliteXC officials so they could put him on their July 26 CBS event that will take place in Diaz’s hometown, Stockton, California.
DreamFighters.com has learned that the scapped [sic] match between Hayato Sakurai and Nick Diaz at DREAM.5 (due to nick’s contract obligations) has been postponed until September, DREAM.6.
Hayato Sakurai has updated his web blog, in which he reports that his fight against Nick Diaz for DREAM.5 is off and that it has been postponed until September at DREAM.6.
Considering this news is coming from Sakurai, I wouldn’t call this fight confirmed just yet. The problem is that DREAM.6 is scheduled for September 23, and EliteXC is planning on running their third CBS event in October. While nothing is official, many believe Diaz’s July 26 fight against Thomas Denny is being used to buildup the inevitable rematch between Nick Diaz and KJ Noons, which would presumably take place on the third CBS event. If that is EliteXC’s plan, Diaz will be unable to compete for DREAM in September due to the clause in his EliteXC contract that prevents him from fighting for another organization 45 days prior to a fight for EliteXC.
Until all parties involved, including EliteXC, confirm that Nick can fight at DREAM.6, I would just consider this a rumor. If EliteXC does allow Nick to go overseas, that would be a strong indicator that Diaz/Noons II won’t be happening at CBS Saturday Night Fights III. In all likelihood, this is probably DREAM trying to schedule something without consulting with EliteXC first. Imagine that.
