Did Cris Cyborg’s utter destruction of Shayna Baszler at EliteXC “Unifinished Business” leave you wanting to see her take on EliteXC’s golden girl Gina Carano on October 4? Yeah, well, us too, but it doesn’t look it’s going to happen. According to NBCSports.com’s Mike Chiappetta, it appears EliteXC is choosing to put Kelly Kobald-Gavin in the cage with Carano at CBS Saturday Night Fights III.
Popular EliteXC female fighter Gina Carano will likely take on Kelly Kobold-Gavin when she returns to the cage on CBS’s Oct. 4 production, a source close to one of the fighters told NBCSports.com.
The fight has not yet been officially signed but is expected to be announced soon, according to the source.
There’s likely two reasons why EliteXC has chosen to go with Kobald in lieu of Cyborg. One, after abysmal ratings for EliteXC’s second CBS effort, it more evident now than ever how critical Carano is to the organization’s success. Cyborg presents a very real threat to defeat Carano, and EliteXC just can’t afford for her to lose in the near future. Two, EliteXC execs have publicly stated they are working towards running pay-per-views in 2009 in order to produce much needed revenues. In order to succeed, they will need to put together the best possible drawing fights they can, such as Carano vs. Cyborg. These reasons are also why we probably won’t be seeing Kimbo Slice vs. Brett Rogers on October 4 either.
In short, while its disappointing for the fans, it makes the most business sense for ProElite. If they aren’t able to turn the numbers around, there won’t be anymore EliteXC events for us to watch.
