A hand injury has forced another fighter off of Affliction’s second event. According to a report from, Vitor Belfort has withdrawn from his Oct. 11 bout with Matt Lindland due to the broken hand he suffered during his July 19 fight with Terry Martin.

Affliction VP Tom Atencio confirmed the news.

“Vitor is out, I spoke with him I think yesterday and he told me. Actually, it was on Tuesday we had a conversation for about an hour or so, and yeah, I guess he broke his hand in two places is what he told me and he had been having 2, 3 and 4 opinions on it. He finally got the opinion that he wanted I guess and they told him to step out for a while.”

Tom doesn’t sound too happy. He also went on to dispel rumors that the fight would have been for a title.

Speculation is now turning towards Jake Shields as a possible opponent for Matt Lindland. As reported yesterday, Shields is awaiting ProElite’s approval to fight in an outside promotion against a mystery middleweight. Atencio refused to confirm or deny the rumors.

“I don’t confirm anything until I have all the papers signed.”

Vitor Belfort commented on the situation via Tatame.

“Man, I’m doing physiotherapy now and won’t be able to fight at October 11th, I wanna fight with 100%, so I’ll be at the next show to fight for the title. I spoke to them yesterday and they said I’ll face the winner of Matt Lindland’s next bout for the middleweight title. He doesn’t have an opponent yet, but the winner of this fight will face me probably in December.”

It’s very interesting that Vitor mentions December. All along, Affliction has stated that they plan to run three shows with the third likely taking place in February. However, in a recent report from, they state that Affliction is considering a New Year’s Eve co-promotion with M-1 Global in Japan. It’s unclear if these plans would include DREAM or not. Whatever the plans are though, it’s unlikely Affliction would be putting on a full event in Japan at this point.
