Is The FIGHT! Magazine Cover MMA’s Madden Curse?

Chuck Liddell FIGHT! Magazine CoverI’m sure most of you have probably heard about the “Madden Curse.” If not, nearly every NFL player that has graced the cover of EA’s Madden football game since 2000 either suffered a serious injury, performed poorly, or abruptly retired in the season immediately following their appearance. More on that here. There’s also the Sports Illustrated cover jinx which is eerily similar.

Well, MMA may have it’s own curse too. I was thumbing through the latest issue of FIGHT! Magazine and a certain reader’s question caught my eye in the mailbag section.

THE COVER CURSE

It is now official! When you guys put a fighter on the cover the same month as his biggest fight to date… guess what? He loses! Think I’m making this up? Ask Brock, Hendo, Jens, and now you can add Rampage to the list! As the magazine’s number one fan, I unfortunately must ban Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, Paulo Fihlo, Brian Stann or Miguel Torres from making any cover appearances during the same month in which they are to do battle. I’m sure you’ll understand.

Shhhh! Don’t tell Chuck!

As you can see from the picture, Chuck Liddell did grace the cover of this month’s issue, and we all know what happened to him. You can’t forget about Roger Huerta either.

So is it curse or coincidence?

I’m going to go with curse, for the sole reason curses are much cooler than coincidences.

I do know one thing though. If I’m Randy Couture, and FIGHT! Magazine starts calling asking me to appear on the cover of the November issue, you can bet your ass they’d be greeted with a big fat “hell no” from me.
