Five Good? Minutes With Kimbo Slice On ESPN’s PTI

This Kimbo Slice appearance on today’s episode of ESPN’s Pardon The Interruption has quite a few other sites outraged over this interview Tony Kornheiser and Dan Le Batard conducted with Kimbo.

My question. What did you expect? This isn’t the first time they’ve been forced to cover MMA on the show, and it”s obvious they know nothing about it.

Yes, they played off the stereotype, and the interview was awful. Yes, they should have at least made an attempt to learn something about it. And yes, interviews like these have fired me up in the past too. But, the vast majority of their viewers don’t know any better. Their primary audience isn’t us, it’s casual sports fans who tune in for football and baseball. They don’t have to learn about MMA because their audience doesn’t demand that they do.

Perhaps, I’ve become numb to it, but I do know if it’s going to change, it’s going to take time. This is a marathon, not a sprint. This sport is still very young, and in reality, no one has a damn clue what the landscape will look like and how it will be covered in five or ten years from now. As long as MMA continues to grow, the mainstream media will eventually catch on, and guys like Kornheiser will eventually have to educate themselves about the sport or networks like ESPN will find someone who will.

The wheels may turn slow, but they are turning.
