In a week chocked full of negative stories about EliteXC, we can at least end the week on a positive note from Affliction. Tom Atencio has confirmed the best news to come out of Affliction since the match first got canceled. Fedor Emelianenko will face off against former UFC Champion Andrei Arlovski at Affliction’s January event.
MMARated.com has learned that WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko will face Andrei Arlovski at the upcoming Affliction show tentatively scheduled for January 24th in Anaheim, Calif.
Affliction Entertainment VP Tom Atencio confirmed the news with us earlier today.
The only thing that keeps me from getting too excited is that information from Affliction has a tendency to change. The report didn’t mention the match was signed, although Atencio always preaches that he won’t confirm anything unless he has signatures. Regardless, I’ll feel better when Fedor’s camp confirms the news. They’re so unpredictable.
It also looks like they are set to officially announce the event details sometime next week, although all signs point to it to taking place on Jan. 24, right in between UFC 93 and UFC 94, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
As previously reported, there will be no boxing on the card, and as suspected, it’s because they couldn’t put together a worthy boxing match for the planned date.
“We sat down with them and couldn’t come up with a main event boxing match that everyone wanted,” Atenco said.
Like I’ve said before, I’m not very educated when it comes to boxing, but according to Sherdog, the rematch between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito was rumored to be headlining the previously planned hybrid event. From what I remember people saying that was an incredible fight, so if that’s the type of match they’re looking to book in the future, these hybrid events might have some promise.
So what do you think about the Fedor vs. Arlovski fight? Which fight are you more excited for? Fedor vs. Arlovski or Couture vs. Lesnar? Let us know in the comments and vote in the poll on the left.
[UPDATE 10/13/08 6:14PM ET] – I noted above that the report didn’t mention Fedor vs. Arlovski was signed, and guess what. It’s not. The news comes from Dave Meltzer’s latest column on Yahoo! Sports. Apparently, it’s still being finalized. Atencio’s own words:
“It’s still being finalized. But it looks like it will happen.”
The words it “looks like it will happen” coming from Affliction doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Add in the fact that Fedor is involved and we might well just label this a big fat rumor (sarcasm…sort of).
Cross your fingers.
