Thiago Alves has known since his win over Josh Koscheck that he is the number one contender in the UFC Welterweight division. Now that GSP has defended his title, the match-up is set. While many critics aren’t giving Alves much of a chance against St. Pierre, this hasn’t shaken the confidence of ‘The Pitbull’:
“It’ll be a great fight. I’m very excited, I can’t wait… It’s going to be great,” he told Tatame writer Cristiane Ripari…I knew he would win, but not this way. He’s much bigger than the BJ, a better athlete, and the sport today, at that level, you have to be the best athlete…I’ll go there to knock him out.”
While I tend to agree that Alves poses a threat to St. Pierre, I think he may simply be outclassed in this match-up. And with some already labeling GSP as the greatest fighter of all time, he won’t be the last to face such a seemingly uphill battle.

I don’t understand how Snowden or anyone else can call GSP the greatest of all time. He’s still in the middle of his career.
How do we know what GSP’s going to do in the future? What if he loses his next 3 fights? Probably won’t, but we don’t know that for sure. What if Anderson Silva moves up and dominates at 205? Or Fedor goes undefeated for the rest of his career and beats virtually every legit heavyweight there is?
Point being, it’s a little premature to give any fighter that designation until we see how their careers play out.
That’s a conversation for after their careers are over.
