Nick Diaz’s first fight for Strikeforce will come against MMA legend Frank Shamrock. While this news may come as a bit of a shock to some, I’m not surprised considering the bad blood between Diaz’s trainer, Cesar Gracie, and Frank Shamrock.
In March of 2006, they faced off on the first Strikeforce card in a fight that ended only :21 seconds into the round by a big KO courtesy of Shamrock’s right hand.
Diaz and the rest of the Cesar Gracie clan weren’t very happy about the way Shamrock had conducted himself leading up to and after the fight, which led to Jake Shields and Nick issuing a challenge to Shamrock, something Frank is well aware of.
“I do know him (Diaz) personally. Nick Diaz is very similar to me. We both grew up in a broken home with abusive parents. We have that in common. He’s gone on an MMA quest, going to all the gyms; he even trained with my father for a few minutes. We have common ties. But I know as a fact he wasn’t too happy when I knocked out his coach, Cesar Gracie (in 2006). I think he’s a nice guy but I’m going to knock him out and move on to the next one.”
As you may already know, Diaz has competed at welterweight and lightweight in his career, while Shamrock has primarily competed as a middleweight. To solve the weight issue, the fight will be contested at a catchweight of 179 lbs.
Although Diaz will still be at a size disadvantage, Shamrock hasn’t had to come in that light for a fight in his career, which could really throw off his stamina and conditioning. Diaz, on the other hand, will have to cut little to no weight, which should be in his favor, since given the size, strength and power of Shamrock, he’ll need to be the better conditioned fighter if he wants to take home a victory.
It might have taken over 3 years, but that’s okay. I’m just glad it’s actually happening.
