White To Coker: I Like You, But…

Dana WhiteJust like they did when Elite XC rolled into town, the UFC has opted to counter program the April 11th ‘inaugural’ Strikeforce card.

It has long been documented that Dana White has had nothing bad to say about Scott Coker and Strikeforce, but it appears that he isn’t simply going to allow them a clear lane to break into his market.

According to MMA Mania, Spike TV will be airing a replay of UFC 94, GSP vs BJ Penn 2, during the broadcast of the Strikeforce card.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has once again scheduled big-time Spike TV programming to counter an event from a competing promotion.

“Shamrock vs. Diaz” on April 11 is the first effort from Strikeforce since it acquired the remaining assets from a defunct ProElite, including a vast tape library and dozens of fighter contracts left over from EliteXC.

And just like it did with EliteXC, Dana White and Co. are going to do their best to retain as many MMA fans as possible by simultaneously airing one of it’s biggest pay-per-view events.

On the same night and at the same time, Spike TV will debut UFC 94: “St. Pierre vs. Penn 2,” which of course is now known simply as “Greasegate,” thanks to some questionable tactics by the corner of GSP.

This latest news, of course, should come as no surprise since Zuffa has made a habit of counter programming in the past. The UFC went up against the EliteXC debut show on CBS last May with a tribute to perhaps the most popular mixed martial artist on the planet, Chuck LIddell, called “Ultimate Iceman.”

While UFC President Dana White has long since supported the efforts of Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, he is by no means going to let his success in the big market come without its share of roadblocks.

I was kind of hoping that Dana would allow Strikeforce some time to grow and that they would be able to maintain an amicable relationship for years to come. Obviously, that is wishful thinking, and it will now be interesting to see how Coker feels about Dana’s business tactics.
