Heath Herring Reportedly Out Of UFC 99 Bout Against Velasquez (Update – Kongo Replaces)

Heath Herring

Here’s the shitty news item of the day.

Heavyweight Heath Herring, who had been scheduled to fight Cain Velasquez in the co-main event at UFC 99, will not fight on the card as scheduled, FanHouse learned Tuesday.

FanHouse’s Ariel Helwani first got the news that Herring is out. I separately confirmed with a source close to Herring that he has been battling an illness for weeks and unable to train.

Herring really was the perfect opponent to test Cain Velazquez at this point, so it definitely sucks to see this fight’s off now. No word yet on who Cain will end up facing. As MDS said though, they could always put Cain against Cro Cop and leave Al-Turk against Todd Duffee. Cro Cop vs Velasquez would be a solid replacement.

Also, for those of you keeping score, Anthony Johnson has also pulled out his scheduled fight against Matt Brown on the TUF 9 Finale card.

Update: Cheick Kongo has been announced as Heath Herring’s replacement.
