The long-rumored EA Sports MMA video game franchise was finally announced today during EA’s press conference at E3 2009.
Nothing to my knowledge was mentioned today, but it’s been said that Randy Couture signed an exclusive deal with EA for the game, which explains why he isn’t in Undisputed. One can only presume EA would go after all the other fighters not in the UFC like Fedor, Barnett, Babalu, F. Shamrock, Diaz, Cung Le, Aoki, etc. etc., but nothing has been reported yet, so we’ll have to wait and see.
I’ve seen a lot of hardcore gamers bagging on EA Sports for their quality of games over the years, but in my experiences with the football and golf games, I always thought they made good products. So hopefully, they’ll rise to the challenge and make a game that meets or exceeds the quality of Undisputed. Another awesome MMA game can only be a good thing, right?
I’ll update this post if any additional details arise.
Update: MMA Junkie has a quote from EA Prez Peter Moore and a few rumors regarding fighters in the game.
“Fans have been begging EA SPORTS to get into the cage, and ‘EA SPORTS MMA’ will put them in control of the sport’s unique combat experience while finally, in an …interactive experience, capturing the raw intensity that has made mixed martial arts one of the fastest growing sports in the world,” EA SPORTS President Peter Moore stated. “We’re ready for the fight.”
However, sources tell MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) Frank Shamrock and Frank Trigg are two of the likenesses expected to be in the game. Current UFC heavyweight Randy Couture, who spent much of 2008 in a contract dispute with the UFC, is also a rumored fighter in the game. Dozens of additional (non-UFC) fighters are expected to be in the first release.
