This isn’t exactly earth shattering since we all pretty much assumed it was coming, but I’d thought I pass along the news that Lyoto Machida and Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua have signed bout agreements to face each other for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship at UFC 104.
MMAmania.com has learned that bout agreements have been signed for the light heavyweight title fight between newly-minted champion Lyoto Machida (15-0) and 2005 Pride FC Middleweight Grand Prix winner Mauricio Rua (18-3) for UFC 104 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, on October 24.
There’s really no reason to act like Shogun deserves the shot based on his recent UFC performances, however, with Rampage out of the picture, and others already booked, Shogun was really the only decent option the UFC had. Another example that timing is everything is this business.
Machida will undoubtedly be the favorite, and it will certainly be hard to pick against him, but if the old Shogun shows up, it could turn into one hell of a fight. One definitely worth looking forward to.

Shogun doesn’t deserve the title shot much less than Rashad did. He was coming off of a knockout of Liddell, same as Shogun, with a split decision over Bisping before that. While that win is more impressive than the suck-fest of Shogun/Coleman, I don’t see Shogun to be much less deserving in any case. Add to that the fact that Shogun’s style does pose a legitimate threat to Machida, as well as the lack of availability of other challengers, I’m happy with this fight.
Shogun deserves the shot assuming he is ready for it. He seemed healthy his last fight so its safe to assume so. He was ranked the number 1 heavyweight before and offers more of an offensive against machida than any other fighter in the bracket.
My question is if shogun is defeated where do we go next?
