In case you missed the event tonight, Strikeforce announced that Gina Carano and Cris Cyborg will finally meet in the women’s fight everyone’s been waiting for on August 15. Let’s just seriously hope they find a way to give us five minute rounds (five of them preferably), because seriously, three minute rounds for fighters the caliber of Carano and Cyborg is just stupid.
Also announced was the Josh Thomson vs Gilbert Melendez rematch for the Strikeforce Lightweight Championship. Nice to see a belt getting defended. Alistair Overeem may defend his title on the card as well making it two. Now, if only Cung Le would come back sometime this decade we’d really be talking.
Update: Scott Coker has confirmed Gina Carano and Cris Cyborg will be fighting for the first-ever Strikeforce female title.
“That’s going to be the No. 1 and the No. 2 female fighting in the world,” Coker said of the world’s two best women mixed martial artists. “It will be our first Strikeforce female title belt. We’re going to be proud to put that on.”
Sweet, at least we’re guaranteed a full fifteen minutes, if it lasts that long of course.
