Good news! Strikeforce has decided that the Gina Carano vs Cris Cyborg 145lbs women’s title fight will not only go for five rounds if necessary as previously announced, but each round will last five minutes. Strikeforce exec Mike Afromowitz spoke to MMA Junkie about the decision.
“I think everyone involved just felt it was the right thing to do,” Afromowitz said. “We felt it was a good idea, and both camps agreed. The commission has approved the proposal as well, so everything is set.”
While the bout will represent both the first five-round female fight and first five-minute round in a female fight in Strikeforce history, Afromowitz said the rule changes will not necessarily apply to all future female contests in the organization.
“We’re not ready to make that decision at this point,” Afromowitz said. “But we’ll definitely see how it goes.”
As far as I’m concerned, as long as the women competing are at a skill level on par with the men, as Carano and Cyborg are, there’s really no good reason why they shouldn’t be fighting five minute rounds. Then of course, there’s a few women’s fights I’ve seen where they shouldn’t even be fighting on a professional level yet, let alone for five minutes at a time.
