Diaz Camp Says Riggs Is Off Strikeforce Card (Update)

Joe RiggsThe hits just keep on coming.

Graciefighter.com has posted a bulletin claiming that Joe Riggs has pulled out of his Strikeforce welterweight title fight due to a bad reaction from a drug he was taking.

Joe Riggs has pulled out of his fight with Nick Diaz after suffering a bad reaction to an as of yet undisclosed drug. According to sources close to the fighter, Riggs will be recovering in the hospital for the next couple of weeks and therefore unable to fight Diaz. At this time it is unclear if Riggs’ problem is physical or mental.

Nick Diaz however, will still be fighting on the card and it is expected that Strikeforce will be announcing Diaz’s new opponent in the next couple of days.

Keep in mind this news if coming from Diaz’s camp, and considering everything that’s happened this week we should treat it as a rumor until Strikeforce or Riggs confirms.

If true though, then yeah it’s disappointing, but not quite the shot to the nuts the Overeem and Barnett news was. The show will still have two title fights, Carano vs Cyborg and Melendez vs Thomson, which still makes for a pretty solid card for a Showtime event.

Or, Strikeforce could just do what MDS suggested and merge their card with Affliction to make one big super card. Would MDS’ line-up work for you?

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers
Gina Carano vs. Cris Cyborg
Renato Sobral vs. Gegard Mousasi
Josh Thompson vs. Gilbert Melendez
Jorge Santiago vs. Vitor Belfort
Paul Buentello vs. Gilbert Yvel
Takanori Gomi vs. Nick Diaz

Works for me. Too bad things like business considerations, logistics and distribution conflicts have to get in the way.

Update: This one’s official now. They’re looking for a replacement to fight Nick.
