Yesterday, there was a premature report stating that Jay Hieron had signed a deal with Strikeforce and would be fighting Nick Diaz on August 15 for the Strikeforce welterweight title.
Today, Jay confirmed it.
He had a few offers from other promotions including the UFC, but since he signed to be in the EA Sports MMA video game, the UFC wasn’t a viable option.
“I couldn’t turn down an opportunity to fight for a title shot. I had other offers on the table and with the UFC. I just signed a video game deal that I was obligated to [and] I couldn’t get out of it.”
“UFC stepped up the offer for me. It was a great offer, but again, I signed a deal with EA Sports a month and a half ago. I was definitely surprised and I was ready to go back to the UFC. I got a great opportunity with Strikeforce, though, and I’m excited to fight for a title.”
Well, at least them making a better offer is better than the UFC telling him, “don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out,” which is pretty much how they made it sound when we first started to hear about the EA ban.
