Leonard Garcia vs. Jameel Massouh: Real close fight between Garcia and Massouh. Massouh somehow survived a huge right hand in the first, but managed to turn it around and delivered quite a few solid elbows on the ground before the round ended. Massouh came out strong in the second nearly choking Garcia out. The fight was up for grabs in the third and Massouh for some seemed content striking with Garcia. Neither really landed anything worth mentioning, but two of the judges thought Garcia did a little more to take it. Massouh’s probably kicking himself for not doing everything he could to take down Garcia in the third where he was clearly winning.

Jeff Curran vs. Takeya Mizugaki: Another close one. Mizugaki used his size and strength to stay on top of Curran for the majority of the fight, but the argument could be made that Curran attacked enough from the bottom, especially late in the third when caught Mizugaki in a tight triangle choke, to pull out the decision. Two of the judges didn’t agree though and gave Mizugaki the fight.

Danny Castillo vs. Ricardo Lamas: Castillo and Lamas kept it on the feet for the entire fight. Lamas seemed to getting the better of the exchanges and was on his way to at least winning the first and the second rounds. That all changed though the moment Castillo landed a huge right hand that sent Lamas to the mat. Castillo pounced and forced Herb Dean to stop the fight. By the way, kinda funny how the lightweights look huge in the WEC.

Joseph Benavidez vs. Dominick Cruz: These two are a couple of firecrackers, aren’t they? They fought at such a high pace the cameraman seemed to have trouble keeping up with them at certain times as they flew back and forth across the cage. It was another pretty close fight, but Dominic Cruz landed more damaging shots and took Benavidez down enough times to take the decision. Sounds like there’s a good chance he’s the next in line to challenge for the bantamweight title.

Miguel Torres vs. Brian Bowles: Holy crap! We have a new candidate for upset of the year. Brian Bowles pulls off the major upset over Miguel Torres to become the new WEC Bantamweight Champion. Bowles was the first to strike when he landed a huge shot that seemed to momentarily stun Torres. He quickly recovered though. In the final moments, Torres unleashed a flurry of punches backing up Bowles as he covered up. Once hit back hit the cage though, he fired off a big right hook that caught Torres right on the button sending him to the mat. Torres looked like he was going to be OK for a second until Bowles landed another huge right that clearly rocked Torres. Another hard left put him out. Bowles followed it with a couple more and the ref stopped the fight (perhaps a a punch of two too late). Incredible win for Brian Bowles.
