In what appears to be a product of the Strikeforce-DREAM alliance, Jason “Mayhem” Miller will take on Jake Shields for the Strikeforce Interim Middleweight title. Mayhem announced the news earlier today at MyFightTeam.com.
No word yet on when they’ll be fighting, but it will presumably take place either in October or November on Strikeforce’s next major card.
It’s a solid fight and a wise choice on Strikeforce’s part. Mayhem has become extremely popular with the MTV crowd thanks to his successful Bully Beatdown reality show, which funny enough featured Jake Shields in one of the early episodes. It’s a great opportunity for Strikeforce/Showtime to draw in a new crop of viewers if they market the show well.
This should also just about do it for the DREAM Middleweight title fight between Jacare and Mayhem originally scheduled for DREAM.11 on October 6. Jacare has since signed with Strikeforce and now this, so it’s safe to say that fight isn’t happening, at least not in October.
The Shields-Miller winner will presumably move on to face Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Cung Le hopefully in late 2009/early 2010 unless of course another project comes up for Le.
Update: Mayhem Miller tweeted that his fight against Jake Shields will take place in October. I originally thought this would take place on the same card as Fedor’s debut, but Scott Coker last said that would likely take place in early November. Not sure if there will be a second major card or not in Oct-Nov.
