Jean-Claude Van Damme Signs On For A Real Fight

Holy crap! Remember when you were a kid and you thought Jean-Claude Van Damme was the baddest son-of-a-bitch on the planet? (Ok, at least I did) He would have kicked anyone’s ass if only he would get in a real fight to prove it. Well, if this report from K-1 Legend is accurate, he finally is, even if it’s 20 years too late.

…actor Jean-Claude Van Damme has signed to fight a professional Muay Thai fight in March 2010.

Van Damme’s opponent will be Somluck Kamsing, a 1996 Olympic gold medal winner in boxing hailing for Thailand. The fight will take place in Las Vegas and be contested under Muay Thai rules with five two-minute rounds. Kamsing has also reported that he will be paid in part based on broadcast revenue, so the fight will be aired in some way – no details yet if it will be on a network or PPV.

Holy crap again! How freakin’ awesome is this? Some people will make fun of it, say it’s stupid and ridiculous. I say best news ever.

Update: A few readers have brought it to my attention that Van Damme competed professionally before his movie career. Some of his old fights can be found on YouTube apparently. Sorry, I wasn’t aware.

    I enjoyed making fun of Van Damme when all those pictures of him hugging and kissing Fedor with love in his eyes were making their way around the internet. If he is willing to step in the ring and have a real fight I gotta respect him for getting in there.

    I’ve collected all of Van Dammes movies, I’ve researched everything I could on him & I can tell u 4 a fact he CAN fight. his fighting record is 18-2. He only lost twice to the same guy but in his last fight he knocked’em out. I hope van damme kicks ass!!! I love his 360° spinning kick! GO JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    This is ridiculous and total bullshit… K1 have only two weight divisions…K1 MAX (which is 155lbs or less) and K1 heavyweight which is an open weight category, he is far too big for K1 MAX and far too small for K1 heavy!

    Elsewhere ppl have suggested this is a Muay Thai fight which of course its not as K1 does not allow elbows or more than one knee in the clinch! Even if its at catchweight Kamsing was a featherweight which is pretty tiny compared to Van Damme even if Van Damme is very short.

    Why would a guy pushing 50 who has lots of money and success fight in a discipline he has little to no training in (i know some Karate guys still compete in K1 but they are cross trained) Total shite!

    Iam sure that if Jean-Damme is physical 100% , he could beat the hell out of Thai boxing ! He could use both leg to kick much high than Thai guy .

    His fight record prior to his movie career was actually excellent – 19-1, I believe? All wins by way of knockout; the loss on a decision.
