It’s rare major MMA events are scheduled back-to-back on the same night, but lucky for us, they are this weekend. Only an hour after the UFC 104 broadcast ends, the DREAM.12 broadcast begins on HDNet at 2AM ET. It’s the debut of DREAM’s “White Cage” and after a handful of fight announcements today, the card is nearly complete.
Kazushi Sakuraba has joined the cast after competing in DREAM.11 only a couple weeks ago. His opponent will be considerably more challenging than Rubin Williams the boxer was however. He’s replacing an injured Melvin Manhoef against Zelg “Benkei” Galesic.
Recently crowned welterweight champ Marius Zaromskis will return to action, but he won’t put his belt on the line. He’ll take on Myeon Ho Bae in a non-title fight.
Japanese pro-wrestlers Katsuyori Shibata and Tokimitsu Ishizawa will meet in the cage for a real fight. A featherweight bout between Keisuke Fujiwara and Tomoya Miyashita was also added.
According to Nightmare of Battle, FEG is currently in the final stages of securing an opponent for Alistair Overeem. He’s front-and-center in the DREAM.12 promotional posters, and confirmed he may fight in the event, but no official announcement has been made yet regarding his participation. If he ends up fighting though, I wouldn’t expect it to be against anyone who poses much of a threat. FEG needs him healthy and in one piece for their K-1 World Grand Prix finals in December.
Also, Murilo ‘Ninja’ Rua, who also appears in the promotional materials will not fight on the card. He opted to stay with his brother, Shogun Rua, to help him prepare for Lyoto Machida.
Update: Fanhouse is reporting that Alistair Overeem will take on James “Exploding Ear” Thompson at DREAM.12. If Alistair doesn’t knock Thompson out early in the first, I will be shocked.
