Yes, you’re reading that correctly. BJ Penn landed 150 total strikes to Diego Sanchez’s 8 according to the Fightmetric report. In fact, Penn landed more strikes on himself in his post-fight celebration than Sanchez did the entire fight. The percentage of strikes landed was equally disproportionate — BJ’s 70% to Diego’s 7%. What’s even crazier is Diego was 0-27 in takedown attempts. Zero. Zilch. Nada.
It was the type of fight that would mentally break most fighters in the early rounds, so if nothing else, you gotta give Diego credit for hanging in there and fighting till the very end.
Update: Here’s another little fun fact courtesy of FightMetric.
Question: When was the last time that BJ Penn got taken down while fighting at 155 pounds?
Answer: You have to go back more than six years to Penn’s fight against Takanori Gomi. Lightweight opponents are 0 for their last 39 takedown attempts against BJ.

This fight is a statement for BJ. I guess he will answer himself the question “What’s next”. After this kind of fight, at this stage of his career, it could well be another shot at GSP.
If he can be this in shape and this sharp at 170, i think it could be interesting. If he’s just going to be a bloated 155′r like he was the last time, there’s no need for it.
Marinovich may be able to help him put the weight on the right way though, so we’ll see.
theres really no need he cant stop georges takedowns. thats been proven time and time again. pierre isnt diego or florian, if he shoots for a takedown your going down, no question about it.
If gsp fought bj 100 times, he would win everytime in my book, he simply outclasses Bj in everyway….
Penn … Alves ….
Have GSP fight BJ at 160 lbs and you will see a fight.
BJ cannot fight GSP at 170 when GSP is closer to 180 by fight time and BJ is 155.
Take away the wt advantage and GSP won’t get him down so easy.
It would be a totally different fight. Obviously.
not really. brock drops 20 pounds and gains it back by fight time. bj and gsp would be at their normal fighting weight by the time they stepped in the octagon. but if they do that they should put bj’s belt on the line.
I meant to say that BJ was a little under 170 when they fought and GSP 180.
I think if GSP and BJ fight at 155 it will be a hell of a fight. Absolutely BJ should put his belt on the line.
GSP won’t have nearly as much success trying to take down BJ at 155.
While we are on the subject, isn’t the weight limit on a class set for a reason? Fighters should weigh in 2 hours prior to the fight. Medical help has allowed fighters like Lesnar to gain 15 pounds or more in the 2 days following weigh-in. Now they can fight that much heavier than their competition, same thing with GSP.
What we are seeing is the naturally bigger guy has a huge advantage.
Let’s move the weigh in to the day of the fight and eliminate this advantage!
Lesnar vs. Mir with Lesnar at 264 and Mir at 255 makes for a much better fight.
Another thought? Why doesn’t GSP move up and Anderson Silva down. Let’s see how GSP does against the naturally bigger guy?
We need to find somebody that can give A. Silva a good fight. I want to see how he responds in the ring after somebody opens up his face a little bit.
So far I haven’t seen anyone come close so all the power to AS.
Maybe this new guy Johnson will have a chance. If he can get a little more seasoning before AS retires.
