Mackens Semerzier vs. Deividas Taurosevicius: Taurosevicius outworked Semerzier for the first two rounds. Semerzier made a strong effort in the third to steal the fight with a submission, but ultimately came up short and lost the decision.
Mike Brown vs. Anthony Morrison: No surprises here, Mike Brown easily disposes of Anthony Morrison early in the first round. Morrison’s speed looked like it cause Brown a few problems in the opening moments, but Brown was able to get a body lock and take Morrison down with relative ease to negate any speed advantages. While they were down Morrison made the mistake of giving Brown his back, Brown took advantage and choked him out. Mike Brown is back!!! Or so says Todd Harris.
Dave Jansen vs. Kamal Shalorus: A lot of leather was thrown in this one. Shalorus unloaded on Jansen throughout the fight. His striking isn’t the most technical you’ve ever seen, but he throws with tremendous power and inflicted plenty of damage. Jansen landed a few of his own, but that was about it. He shot in on Shalorus numerous times throughout the fight, but got stuffed each and every time. Shalorus picked up the unanimous decision and drew a sea of boos with his boastful comments in the post-fight interview.
Urijah Faber vs. Raphael Assuncao: Urijah Faber turned in a great performance in his comeback from his second loss to Mike Brown. The first round was pretty even between Faber and Assuncao, but Urijah really turned it up in the second and third rounds. He dropped Assuncao in both rounds with right hands. In the third though, he was able to take Assuncao’s back while he tried to scramble back to his feet and sink in the rear-naked choke.
It definitely looks the WEC is going to go with Aldo vs Faber next. They brought Aldo into the cage during the post-fight interview. Aldo is up for the challenge but says there’s no way Urijah is taking his belt. Faber respects Aldo, but in his mind, that is his belt. Sets up a great featherweight title fight for later this year.
Jamie Varner vs. Ben Henderson: It was a pretty even fight between Jamie Varner and Ben Henderson right up until the moment Varner shot in on Henderson in the third. Henderson grabbed his neck, sunk in the guillotine and Varner immediately tapped. After the fight, Varner said he showed up to fight, Henderson showed up to grapple. Guess he forgot grappling is a major part of MMA. Either way, he still lost. It will be interesting to see if the WEC decides to go with the Cowboy-Henderson rematch so soon, or if they Varner and Cowboy finally settle their grudge. I’m hoping for the latter.
