Recap & Thoughts
Ross Pearson vs. Dennis Siver: Pretty decent scrap between Ross Pearson and Dennis Siver to start the show. They decided to bang it out on the feet for most of the fight with a little ground action mixed in. It started off even for the first minute or two, but then Pearson really started to tag Siver over and over before taking his back, dragging him to the ground and cutting him open. That only seemed to piss Siver off though. He got back to his feet with a fire under his ass he didn’t have earlier in the fight. Despite that, Pearson still managed to get the better of him for the rest of the fight earning the unanimous decision with sharper striking.
Nate Quarry vs. Jorge Rivera: Jorge Rivera completely owned Nate Quarry tonight. Rivera dropped Quarry several times with huge shots in the first round and delivered a good beating on the ground until Quarry was bloody. They don’t call Nate “The Rock” for nothing though. The dude is tough and somehow he managed to survive Rivera’s onslaught to make it to the second round. No miraculous comeback here though. Rivera landed another huge bomb in the opening minute of the second. Quarry never made it back to his feet before the ref waved it off. Nice win for Rivera.
Roy Nelson vs. Stefan Struve: Wow, Roy Nelson just destroyed Stefan Struve. 30 seconds into the first round Big Country drilled Struve with a huge overhand right. Struve crumbled to the mat, Nelson pounced and finished him off. All those fights on the basketball court really paid off. His punch was right on the money. Nelson told Joe Rogan he wants in the title hunt in the post-fight interview. If he can get himself a top ten win the next time out, maybe it’s time to start considering that as a possibility.
Kenny Florian vs. Takanori Gomi: Takanori Gomi is definitely not the fighter he used to be, or Kenny Florian was just that much better tonight, because Gomi didn’t have anything for Florian. The first two rounds were rather lackluster. Florian basically just outboxed Gomi, repeatedly lighting him up with his jab. Florian mixed in a little of his Muay Thai in the third until Gomi landed his only significant blow of the fight. Florian wasn’t rocked by the punch, but it was enough to convince him it was time to take Gomi down. Kenny timed it perfectly, put Gomi on his back and that was the beginning of the end. Florian dominated Gomi on the ground eventually working his way to locking in a rear-naked choke for the submission win. Unless Gomi improves dramatically, he definitely won’t ever turn into a viable contender for BJ Penn. If he can’t handle Florian’s boxing, he definitely won’t stand a chance against Penn’s.
