Alistair Overeem Wants Fabricio Werdum, But May Chase K-1 Crown Instead

In the Strikeforce heavyweight triangle that exists between Fabricio Werdum, Fedor Emelianenko and Alistair Overeem, everybody seems to want something different. M-1 Global wants an immediate rematch with Fabricio Werdum, Strikeforce wants Fedor vs. Overeem in some capacity and Fabricio Werdum just wants to capitalize off his big win over Fedor, though he’s not too crazy about fighting Overeem whom he already beat in PRIDE.

And what does Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem want? Well, of course, he wants something no one else seemingly does — a rematch of his own against Werdum.

“Let’s just say this, there’s a couple of fights that I would like to have, and I’m going to start with the first one: the first one is going to definitely be Werdum — he’s the winner of that fight [against Fedor Emelianenko]. I’m sure, 100% sure, I’m going to beat him. It’s payback time, baby. Payback time, and it’s going to be sweet.”

If Overeem can’t get the Werdum rematch, he’ll settle for a fight with Fedor even though it doesn’t carry the same weight it did before.

“Second fight is the Fedor fight. He lost his last fight. Did he get caught? I don’t know. Has he lost it? I don’t know. But he’s still one of the guys I would love to fight. I’ve been challenging him for a year, I was hoping that I was going to be the one to beat him, but now he’s lost to Werdum. But still, I’ve been challenging him for a year, so I still want to fight him.”

There’s also a third option and it doesn’t involve Strikeforce. Overeem has fared very well in K-1 in the past couple years, and it’s become a goal of his to become the K-1 WGP Finals champion. With the way Strikeforce and K-1’s schedules line up, he may not have the opportunity to do both.

“And then the third choice would be the K-1 Finals, the last fight. I have qualified for the final 16. I’m not entirely sure if I’m going to compete, but I would like to compete. K-1 is striking, I like it, it has a little bit different audience. It’s very popular in Holland. So yeah, I want to become champion. I see myself as champion.”

If I was a betting man, I’d put all my money on Overeem bowing out of the Strikeforce mess and giving the K-1 GP another go. It could be quite awhile before M-1 and Strikeforce get their issues straightened out and there’s not much incentive for Overeem to sit around and wait if he has a great opportunity with a big payday waiting for him overseas in the meantime.
