Anderson Silva Changes Mind, Wants To Stick To The Middleweight Division

So much for Anderson Silva moving up to light heavyweight like Dana White alluded to in recent months. On the UFC 117 conference call today, Silva said he now just wants to stick to fighting at 185 lbs. and plans to retire in the division.

The UFC’s 185-pound champion today said that he plans to retire in the 185-pound class and apparently is uninterested in fighting at light heavyweight (where he’s competed twice) or heavyweight (a class in which he’s previously expressed interest).

“I like my weight division that I fight in, and I’m prepared to stay in my weight division,” Silva today said through translator and manager, Ed Soares.

“Basically, what he said is that he said I didn’t translate it exactly, but he wants to retire fighting in his weight category,” Soares said.

Silva added that if someone like say GSP or Shogun Rua wants to fight him, they’re going to have to come to the middleweight division to do it.

“If you want to beat me up, make weight and come fight me in my category, my division,” Silva said through his manager and interpreter Ed Soares.

In other words, the middleweight superfight with Silva that Georges St. Pierre wants to end his career on suddenly has a slightly better chance of happening, while a light heavyweight title showdown with former Chute Boxe teammate Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is much pretty much down the tubes unless the UFC wants it bad enough to convince Silva otherwise or he changes his mind.. again.

That’s too bad, there’s some great match-ups for him at 205. Doesn’t really matter though, it changes from day to day…

  3. actually john, i think hes really avoiding stephan bonnar. everyone knows bonnar would kill silva

& on that note UFC is officially in the dumpster. Nothing Anderson Silva says should be taken as significant, this guy changes his minds so often and says whatever happens to be the most conveinent or politicaly correct statement. Hes such an Obama and avoids any conflict / challenge. Its pathetic.

People should give up on GSP v Silva. Wish Silva would just retire already.

Trust me, its gonna be a long while before the UFC goes anywhere near a dumpster.

Sales arent but The quality and integrity is in the dumpster.
UFC cant make great fights let alone strong cards on a consistent basis.
( Well they could if Joe Silva had half a brain )
Lesnar v Carwin was epic..its all downhill from here.

Why? Because no one can beat him?

It’s weird I actually predicted this right after he fought maia.anderson always says the most important things to him is his belt, and retiring as the best p4p fighter.and the easiest way to do that is to stay at middleweight(since he’s already cleaned it out).
