Strikeforce Challengers 10 took place earlier this evening at the Dodge Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona. The event was headlined by a catchweight bout between Joe Riggs and Louis Taylor. The event also featured Strikeforce’s one-night women’s welterweight tournament and Ryan Couture’s professional debut.
Results and quick recap after the jump.
It took him two and a half rounds to do it, but Joe Riggs finished his headlining fight against Louis Taylor in impressive fashion. Halfway through the third round, Riggs cracked Taylor out of nowhere with a big left hook. Taylor attempted to clinch and buy time to recover, but Riggs had other things in mind. He put Taylor on his back and worked his way into the crucifix position and rained down strikes causing Taylor to tap.
In women’s welterweight tournament action, Miesha Tate used her grappling prowess to earn consecutive unanimous decisions over Maiju Kujala and Hitomi Akano to win the one-night tournament and earn an eventual title shot against Sarah Kaufman (or Marloes Coenen should she defeat Kaufman first). In the opening round, Tate controlled Kujala well enough in the clinch and on the ground to convince the judges to award her the win after 6 minutes of fighting (2 3-min rounds). In the other semi-final bout, Akano snapped Carina Damm’s 10-fight win streak with an armbar in the second round. The final bout between Tate and Akano was primarily a grappling affair that Akano seemed to be getting the better of in the first round, but lost in the second and third. After surviving a submission scare in the first, Tate dominated the rest of fight from Akano’s back as she threatened with chokes and strikes.
Ryan Couture made his father Randy quite proud in his professional debut and only needed 75 seconds to do it. After being on the wrong end of a fireman’s carry takedown, Couture immediately locked up a triangle on Lucas Stark to kick off his pro career with a win.
