We already knew Gray Maynard would challenge Frankie Edgar for his UFC lightweight title sometime this winter, and it now it appears we also know when and where. According to MMA Fighting, the rematch will take place on New Year’s Day at UFC 125 in Las Vegas.
The UFC lightweight stars will square off for the 155-pound championship at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas during the New Year’s Day UFC 125 event, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to MMA Fighting.
The bout will be a rematch of their April 2008 fight, won by Maynard in a unanimous decision. It remains the only loss on Edgar’s record, as the New Jersey fighter has since won five in a row, including two straight wins over the legendary Penn in establishing himself at the top of the world’s lightweights.
A middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort was rumored for UFC 125, however Ed Soares most recently said Silva’s rib was still sore and he wasn’t confident Silva would be ready to go in time for a Jan. 1 fight. With the addition of Edgar-Maynard 2 to the New Year’s card, it seems even more likely now that Silva-Belfort will be bumped to Super Bowl Weekend.
So far, the only other expected fights for UFC 125 are Thiago Silva vs. Brandon Vera and Chris Leben vs. Brian Stann. Most pundits aren’t expecting Edgar-Maynard to be a big hit at the box office, so it will be interesting to see if the UFC has a big co-main event planned to help sell the card.
