Strikeforce’s final event of the year has taken another big hit. Last week it was Herschel Walker withdrawing from his featured bout, and this week it’s Valentijn Overeem pulling out of his heavyweight bout against Antonio Silva.
Valentijn Overeem, brother of Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, is injured and will be unable to fight Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva as planned on the Dec. 4 fight card on Showtime, said MMAWeekly.com sources. The nature of the injury was not disclosed.
The bout was to be Valentijn’s Strikeforce debut. He is currently on a two-fight winning streak, and was expected to be a strong addition to the promotion’s heavyweight class.
It’s unclear if Silva will remain on the card, however MMA Weekly seems to think Strikeforce won’t be able to find a suitable replacement opponent on one week’s notice.
In other Strikeforce news, Five Oz. is reporting that Daniel Cormier and Devin Cole will headline Strikeforce Challengers 13 on Jan. 7.
