Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard III, Frank Mir vs. Roy Nelson Likely For UFC 130

Now that we know Gray Maynard will definitely get another crack at Frankie Edgar and his lightweight title, the only question is when? Well, it could happen on Memorial Day Weekend at UFC 130, says ESPN.

It looks like we also have an answer on what Anthony Pettis is going to do in the meantime. His manager says he plans to fight.

“Anthony was obviously disappointed in not getting the title shot, but he also understands why Dana made that decision,” Roberts said. “After consulting with Anthony and Duke Roufus, we collectively decided that it would be in Anthony’s best interest to take a fight in the meantime.

“A 10-month or possible year layoff was just too long. We believe with a win against a top lightweight contender Anthony will still get the title shot later in the year”.

Another big fight appears to be in the works for UFC 130. Reported earlier today that a heavyweight match-up between Frank Mir and Roy Nelson will take place on the May 28 card. MMA Junkie confirmed the news.

A heavyweight bout between former champ Frank Mir (14-5 MMA, 12-5 UFC) and fellow contender Roy Nelson (15-5 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is in the works for a planned Memorial Day weekend event expected to be UFC 130.

A source close to the negotiations told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) verbal agreements are in place for the heavyweight tilt.

An additional source said the contract issues that forced Nelson out of an early-year event aren’t expected to be an issue.

If Frank Mir and Roy Nelson are going to fight each other in May though, then who is Junior dos Santos going to fight? Brock Lesnar? I would have put money on the UFC pairing JDS with Mir, but I guess not.

It is possible JDS can loose the match for an interim belt if they put him up against Mir…now I’m not saying he will but it’s a possibility so don’t start getting all crazy on me for saying that.
The fans want to see Cain and Santos so I wonder who they will match Santos up with….??

  • Chaiyoshnay

Dana White should take this opportunity to talk with Scott Coker about letting JDS replace AA in the Strikeforce heavyweight tourney. I know this sounds crazy, but think about it. What if, just what if JDS wins the damn thing? Not only does it solidify JDS as the true number one contender, but we can finally have an answer as to who the best heavyweight in the world is when and JDS finally faces Cain.

Remember that Dana White let Chuck Liddel fight in Pride that time. Do it Dana! Who the hell else is JDS going to fight?

    • Leo

What if he loses? Then Scott Coker should take the opportunity to talk to Dana about letting the Winner of the tourney fight Cain then we will know who the best heavyweight in the business really is..

    • i like sexy time

Your right you do sound crazy! It wont happen! Although i would like to see it.

    • http://none nahman

what you guys are talking about cant even be serious…if you have ever heard dana white talk you will know at the end of the day business is business and in reality the ufc is at the top of the chain, and strikeforce is not so why would the ufc want to give any media attention to strikeforce, and on top of that if dos santos loses their number 1 contender is gone, and besides dos santos right now they dont really have any new threatning prospects for the heavyweight division…

  • Truth Nothing But The Truth

Sounds great guys, but we all know Dana White doesn’t want what’s best for MMA and the fan….all he cares about is himself and money!

    • Leo

Is it just me or does Dana think he’s lex Luther or something..

      • Number 1

The soon Dana White gets out of MMA the fans will get to see the fights they want. Congrats to Strikeforce and Scott for putting a tournament together…something we will never see Dana “Money” White.

The only reason you’re able to watch MMA is because of Dana White. Give him his respect.

  • Number 1

I hope Frankie wins. That would be fun if they did the first 4 fight match in MMA history down the line with these 2 guys.

  • Bigcity

give Toney a shot at JDS

    • sandman

      Who is Toney???

  • sandman

Would like to see Mir put Nelson to sleep…

    • Big D

      Me too!

      • Leo

I’d like to see Nelson eat Mir
