Matt Hughes Pondering Retirment, Helping BJ Penn Train For UFC 127

Matt Hughes appeared to be on a comeback of sorts last year, right up until BJ Penn knocked him out in 21 seconds at UFC 123. Hughes has one fight left on his current deal which he plans to fulfill sometime this year, but after that is a big question mark. He tells ESPN’s Josh Gross he may call it a career or he may fight 2-3 more times.

“I don’t know if I’ll sign another contract with the UFC. I would have to talk to my wife. I’d have to talk to Dana. I wouldn’t call it a retirement. It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for me to fight two or three times. I have said I’m going to fight one more time for the last three fights. I meant it. I really have.”

If the seed is already planted in his head that he might fight two or three more times, then Matt Hughes is probably going to fight two or three more times. And after that, just one more, and after that… As Fightlinker put it, fighting and competition is like a drug addiction for these guys. They know they should quit, but just one more!

In the meantime, Hughes has plans to fly out to Hawaii to help BJ Penn train for his upcoming fight against Jon Fitch at UFC 127. Kinda funny in this sport how one minute your former rival knocks you out and the next minute you’re helping him get ready for this next one. It’s pretty cool if you ask me.
