Alistair Overeem Gunning For Cain Velasquez’s #1 Ranking

“Cain Velasquez is No. 1 now because I haven’t competed against the names. So there is that argument, that I haven’t fought the caliber opponents I should — I wanted to, but either they wouldn’t fight me, or the schedule didn’t work out. But that’s what this tournament is about… I’m very motivated, very healthy, very confident. Everything is different now for me than when I fought Werdum. I was a light heavyweight then and I’m a heavyweight now. I’m much better than I was then.”

—Alistair Overeem talking to MMA Fighting about rankings in the heavyweight division

We’ll have to see how the grand prix plays out, but if Alistair Overeem, Fedor Emelianenko or Fabricio Werdum win the tournament as it currently stands, they’ll each have a strong case to be considered the number one heavyweight in the world. I think Cain deserves the top spot now but his inactivity from shoulder surgery is going to hurt him in the rankings as the year progresses.
