Wanderlei Silva Explains Why He’s Not Fighting Brian Stann at UFC 130

I don’t know if I’ve ever been as confused about an impending match-up as I have with Wanderlei Silva vs. Brian Stann. I can’t even remember how many times this fight was on then off again. The fight has been removed from the official UFC 130 fight card, so it definitely looks like it’s off now. Recent reports even had Jorge Santiago taking on Stann at UFC 130, but Santiago swears he hasn’t signed with the UFC yet so I’m not sure what’s going on there. What I can tell you is Wanderlei Silva isn’t sure when he’s going to be ready to return to action and that’s why he’s not fighting Stann at UFC 130. Although, he also tells MMA Heat’s Karyn Bryant in this interview that he wasn’t too crazy about fighting in the first place because he’s an “American Hero” and he likes him, as Dana White mentioned on several occasions. Wanderlei says he’ll still fight him if that’s what everyone wants, but clearly that type of opponent didn’t motivate Wanderlei to hurry back to the Octagon. Instead, Wand is looking for fights against guys like Vitor Belfort and Nate Marquardt.

wandy is ducking stann 4 sure.

  • hippie_dude420

plain and simple wandy is ducking stann

    • Leo

Was that interview in Portuguese? I could not understand wand for sh!t. All I got was: “yes, yes. ofcourse I’m scared of Stan”

    • sam snee

you may be right, but i doubt that its plain and simple. hard to imagine wand ducking anyone though, right?

  • http://highdollar.net/wordpressHD/mma-2/ Billdo

Ducking him? Maybe. But not because he’s scared of him. Wanderlei has been in the game a very long time and doesn’t want to be an up and comer’s stepping stone. He wants to fight the top names, and he deserves that. Brian Stann would have his hands full with Vitor, Marquardt or Sonnen so it’s not like Wandy wants to fight pansies.

      I agree 100 percent!

  • Butters

Ducking?? Most MMA guys couldn’t hang with the guys silva spars against. Grow up.

  • Freddy

Wand is not ducking anyone he has fought the top named opponets his entire career pssh ducking get real. Stann isnt even ranked

  • sandman

I agree Silva has been fighting top competition his entire career, so it wouldn’t make sense that he would duck somebody as if he’s avoiding a loss. Who knows what ‘s going on with him, and UFC 130 for that matter. Maybe the tentative card should just be scrapped and we’ll go from UFC 129 to UFC 131. You know, like some elevators leave out the 13th floor and go from the 12th floor to the 14th floor… :-)

to be honest i do think sliva is ducking stann because at first sliva said he won’t fight him because stann a america hero(whatever that means),then sliva said he take the fight then calls it off again? and then sliva calls out vitor to take the heat off of stann, seriously very odd behavior by wandy and yes i think he is ducking him because stann at middleweight is a beast.

  • HLG

I think it is safe to assume that Wanderlei is not ducking Stann, given that he showed excitement for fighting Marquardt, a more experienced and larger opponent. Both Wanderlei and Stann are class acts and exceptional representatives for what the sport stands for. If they do fight, I could easily see it taking fight on the night honors.

Wanderlei can say what he wants today about not fighting stann but he needs some wins point blank period beatin bisping doesn’t prove nuthin get a streak goin stop pickin fights and just fight and win

  • sam snee

it just doesnt make sense that silva would duck anyone. Maybe he just really likes stan, orrr maybe he doesnt see much in that victory. Why is bisping being heralded still, Wand Beat him, Henderson cleaned his clock. Wand deserves higher competition. Now, from my point of view, Stann is a dangerous fight because to win, means little, to lose means a lot. and Stan may not be famous, but damn did he look good against leben. Why did leben even have to fight him? its all mixed up, the more i learn of this sport, the more i go…”really? he’s fighting HIM? …okay…i guess.” But those uneven matchups provide for upsets and shake-ups in the rankings

    • Big D

I agree with you. Sometimes I say why did hr take that fight too. I here everyone say, he needs to fight anyone the UFC puts in front of him. Well first, if you have been in the sport that long, you should be able to pic your fights just like boxing. Look at Matt Hughes, he said he only wants top fights now. Remember in MMA you are only a few losses in a row from retiring which could be 3 fights in a year. If you are not in title sight then be smart with who you fight. Just my opinion. ;)

  • http://om smh

Its called promotin fighters so they can have more fighters to bring big ratings u can’t just go around the circle same 5 fighters fighting each other sumthin like the ufc heavywieghts is doin right now

  • Stevey

Please, for the love of GODS, Chael Sonnen come back. :D
Sonnen needs to solve his personal issues and face Silva asap. If that happens I’m not sure we will ever see Silva vs GSP. :D Sonnen is 1 tough bad ass and is funny as hell. ;)

  • aziz

sonnen is nothing more than a cheating punk he used steriods in the silva fight and silva had a fractured rib and still beat sonnen thats how much he sucks he talks big stuff because he thinks he can win with steriods
