It’s going to be a little while longer before we find out if Tito Ortiz’s UFC run has reached the end of the road. He was set to face off against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in the UFC Fight Night 24 main event in a must win light heavyweight bout, but it appears an accidental headbutt in training has forced him off the card. Dana White broke the news earlier today and announced that Phil Davis would fill in.
Tito has pulled out of fight night due to getting stitches. 8-0 Phil davis will be fighting lil nog now and is pumped for this fight!
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned from sources close to the promotion that an accidental training-session headbutt forced Ortiz to receive 22 stitches. An MRI and CT scan indicated no serious damage, but the wound was severe enough to force Ortiz to withdraw from the bout.
A timetable has not yet been determined for Ortiz’s return – a bout White has referred to as a “must-win” matchup for the former light heavyweight champion.
It’s a big opportunity for Phil Davis. He was originally scheduled to face Matt Hamill at UFC 129 until Hamill was pulled off to fight Rampage at UFC 130. Jason Brilz was going to step in, but now Davis gets to headline his first UFC card against one of the division’s toughest veterans. We’ll find out on March 26 if he’s able to make the best of it.
