UFC 134 is official.
UFC 134 “Silva vs. Okami” is scheduled to take place at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Saturday, August 27 and will air live on pay-per-view at 9pm ET/6pm PT. The card will be headlined by a middleweight title fight between champion Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami.
“Anderson Silva is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world,” said UFC President Dana White. “He has won 14 straight and hasn’t lost since January 2006, when he lost a controversial fight against none other than Yushin Okami. Okami is the number two middleweight in the world and a powerhouse in that division. He is the winningest Japanese fighter in UFC history and also the only guy to have beaten the greatest fighter in the world in the last seven years. He wants to do it again, but this time, in Anderson’s home country and win the UFC middleweight title. If he does, he will be the first ever Japanese champion.”
Hardly anyone expects him to win, but Yushin Okami told O Globo (via ESPN) that he plans to use his “technique, power and speed” to “smash” the champion.
“I don’t like that fight being down as a victory of mine but I had lessons there and I want to use everything. I hope that now we will have a real end. I know he is a complete fighter and has no weak points. But, if I use all my technique, power and speed, I will smash Anderson Silva… Of course I promise I will defeat Anderson. I will use all what I learnt in life to accomplish this objective. I know Brazil is one of the great countries in MMA. I insist, it’s an honour to be able to face him here. I hope they will be able to look at me as the man who defeated Anderson Silva and begin to be my fans. My only thought is to become the first Asian champion in UFC.”
In other featured action, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira returns to action from hip surgery to take on Brendan Schaub. Dana White says it’s a big heavyweight fight and the winner will find themselves “in the mix.”
“This is a big fight in the heavyweight division. We just saw what happened last week with Junior dos Santos. He won his fight and will now face Cain Velasquez for the heavyweight championship. The winner of this fight between Big Nog and Brendan Schaub puts one of these guys right in the mix of the heavyweight division.”
In another featured bout, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua meets Forrest Griffin in a rematch from his UFC debut.
