Nate Marquardt Out Of The UFC, Charlie Brenneman Faces Rick Story at UFC on Versus 4 (Update)

Tomorrow’s UFC on Versus 4 card has taken a major last-minute hit. Several outlets are reporting that Nate Marquardt didn’t get medical clearance and won’t be allowed to headline tomorrow’s show. MMA Junkie is reporting that Charlie Brenneman will face Rick Story instead and Pat Barry vs. Cheick Kongo has been bumped up to the main event slot. ( has learned that Marquardt is a late scratch from Sunday’s UFC on Versus 4 event, and opponent Rick Story (13-3 MMA, 6-1 UFC) will now instead meet Charlie Brenneman (12-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) on the evening’s main card.

With the late change, a highly-anticipated heavyweight bout between Pat Barry (6-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) and Cheick Kongo (15-6-2 MMA, 8-4-1 UFC) has now been promoted to main-event status.

It’s unclear what caused Marquardt to fail his medicals, but his camp did release a statement explaining that this was only a temporary setback and plans to be back in action as soon as possible.

Update: Wow, so it looks like whatever caused Nate Marquardt to fail his medicals pissed Dana White off enough to make a video announcing his release. It’s still unclear what happened, but MMA Fighting heard from one member of Marquardt’s camp that he “believed he could make weight before commission members ruled him out.”

Dana says Marquardt will never fight in the UFC again.

    • Steve Barry

Thanks  for the heads up Bill!

        • Bill Schumer

If you eat right, certain steroids can help you lose weight instead of gaining it.

          • ass

i didnt know that…thanks for enlightning me

      • Battlestar

that would be weird if he got canned for steroids simply because there have been fighters who have gotten popped for it and they’re still around…

thats crazy I thought he may have not been cleared cause he was cutting to much weight, but damm now he gets fired must’ve been something serious

  • sandman

Dana must have had good reason, because Marquardt has been around a while, and he’s been good….

  • Booboomadness

lolololol greg jacksons way lol there was no way nate could make 170 to much muscle

  • aalvarez

Its Official, Dana White is the new George Steinbrenner.

  • Kimoraconstruction

steroids help with recovery, these guys use them to help cut weight and gain weight.

  • Miltrain

well if it was steriods, why was Chael Sonnen not dropped???? bit of a double standard

  • Matt Silliman

I’m guessing Dana believes that Nate knew this would/could happen but didn’t do anything and I bet that pissed Dana off enough to fire him. From a bosses stand point, if someone even thinks they might not pass the medical, they need to address it early on so Dana and Joe Silva can make the changes that need to be made. Nate probably kept his mouth shut and just hoped he passed.

  • Mr Kitty

I can’t wait to hear the official story. This sucks for the fans.

  • Steve Barry

Sorry guys I’m out of town. Hadn’t had a chance to get on the computer. Not sure if the reason is out yet or not.

    • Matt Silliman

They are saying he had plenty of time to clear up his condition but failed to do so. That rules out roids. They can’t release his condition but it was something that had been addressed weeks ago and didn’t get cleared up

Can someone explain what is required as “medicals” What are they? Tests (I assume you have to pass) what is it exactly that the commission’s want or do for these medicals?
