It looks like Matt Mitrione is about to take his first big step in competition. ESPN is reporting that Mitrione will meet another hot heavyweight, Cheick Kongo, on October 29 at UFC 137.
A heavyweight bout between Matt Mitrione and Cheick Kongo will go down Oct. 29 at UFC 137 in Las Vegas, sources close to the event confirmed Thursday.
As you can see above, the UFC has seemingly confirmed the match-up along with the Mirko Cro Cop vs. Roy Nelson report from yesterday.
Kongo will definitely be a test for Mitrione. The TUF 10 star is riding a wave of momentum and is full of piss and vinegar, but I did notice that he let his hands fall quite a bit when he was engaging with Christian Morecraft in his last fight. Cheick Kongo isn’t the biggest power puncher in the world, but as Pat Barry just learned, he certainly has the power to put you out if he catches you right, even when he’s dazed and confused. Mitrione will definitely want to keep his hands up when he starts trading with Kongo, but I think it’s a winnable fight for him as well.
Update: The UFC has announced both Matt Mitrione vs. Cheick Kongo and Mirko Cro Cop vs. Roy Nelson for UFC 137. With GSP vs. Nick Diaz at the top, this card is looking solid.
