Good news, UK UFC fans. The UFC is going to England this year after all.
UFC UK president Marshall Zelasnik expressed serious doubts last month that they would make it to the England this year after scheduling conflicts with Spike TV, however both The Telegraph and MMA Junkie are reporting today that UFC 138 will take place at the LG Arena in Birmingham, England on Nov. 5.
It’s official. There will be a UFC event in the UK in 2011, and it will be in Birmingham on Nov 5 at the LG Arena. It will not be a Fight Night, but will be UFC 138.
Marshall Zelaznik, UFC UK vice-president, told The Telegraph yesterday: “I’m very happy to announce UFC 138 will be bringing fireworks to Birmingham on November 5. The last time the UFC was in the second city was UFC 89 in October 2008, and we are very happy to be going back there this bonfire night.”
Because this event is being dubbed UFC 138, the Nov. 19 San Jose card, which features Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos, has become UFC 139.
Shortly after the report hit, the UFC confirmed via its UK Twitter feed that Chris Leben vs. Mark Munoz will headline the card. MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani adds that this will serve as the organization’s first five-round non-title fight main event.
It wasn’t announced, but UFC 138 is expected to air on Spike TV via same-day tape delay.
Update: Dana White confirms the card will air on Spike.
