It doesn’t look like Gilbert Melendez is going to get his wish to fight in the UFC, at least not for now.
MMA Fighting is hearing from Cesar Gracie that Melendez will defend his Strikeforce lightweight championship against Jorge Masvidal sometime this fall.
In a Friday interview, Gracie told MMA Fighting that a date had not yet been decided upon, but that the camp had been informed of the championship pairing.
Strikeforce has not yet announced any events past September, but it is not expected to host any major events in October, making November or December the likely target for the bout.
It should be a good fight, but unfortunately not the one Melendez and fans were hoping for. Interestingly, Melendez is only one of three Strikeforce champions still contracted with the organization so I’m sure Strikeforce and especially Showtime want to keep him in the fold as long as possible.
