Anderson Silva Talks Chael Sonnen, Georges St. Pierre & Jon Jones

It’s not too often that Anderson Silva speaks to the media himself, so when he does, it’s usually work listening to.

Silva and his manager Ed Soares hit the radio waves recently for interviews with ESPN 1100 and ESPN 710. The topics: Chael Sonnen, Georges St. Pierre and Jon Jones. One he hates, one he wants to fight and the other he rather be friends with. I’m sure you can guess which is which, but nevertheless here are the quotes.

Silva on Sonnen:

“Yeah of course, Chael talks too much. He talked about my family. He’s got no respect for my wife. No respect for the people in Brazil. It’s a problem. I understand it’s a promotion, but this is no promotion. This is bad. I don’t like this. The people in Brazil don’t like this. It’s bad for the sport.”

Silva on GSP:

“Georges is the best fighter in this sport. My opinion is it a great, great, great fight — me and Georges. I like Georges. He’s a good man. He’s a good guy for this sport, and he represents the sport [well] to all the people in Canada. Maybe one day this fight is the good fight.”

Silva on Jones:

“No man. I see the start…the first time that Jon Jones [fought]. I’m seeing [him like me in] my first fight. I talked to Jon Jones maybe for three or four days when we stayed together in the UFC. I told him, ‘Hey man, you’re the best; this time you need to take your focus to training. You have more and more fights a year, but you no have opponents.’ A fight with Jon Jones, this is maybe no good. I’m in a different class. In my academy we have Rogerio Minotoro [Noguiera], Rafael Feijao and Lyoto Machida. All the guys are the same class [as Jon Jones]. One day I watched the first fight of Jon Jones [in the UFC] and I said, ‘I like this guy.’ He is great. I like it. He has the old positions. I like it. I don’t know. A fight with me is just no good fight.”

In a perfect world, Silva would finish out his career with those three fights, but unfortunately the only we’re probably going to get is Chael Sonnen.

Silva vs. GSP would still be fun, but it really feels like that ship has sailed and GSP never seemed to be too crazy about it anyways.

As for Jones-Silva, Jones did say he would fight Silva if that’s what everyone wanted, so maybe Silva will pull a Rashad and get all offended. Doubtful, but we can always hope!

The ship has definitely sailed for Silva x GSP. But I think this wouldn’t even be a fair fight due to the size of Silva compared to GSP’s.

I’d be crazy for watching Silva x Jones… that ship still ongoing. However, people can say Silva has a body type to fight at 205… maybe that’s true. But he comes from a 170, to a 185 and then, maybe, it couldn’t be good to reach 205 at this point of his career. It may be easier to see Jones over the HW division…

Above all that, let’s just see what happens in Silva x Sonnen II before considering this super fights. Silva might have finally found a big challenge at 185, so let’s enjoy that.

Yeah I was all hyped for a GSP/Silva match-up, but now that Jones is literally a king I would so much rather see that fight than GSP.

Once Jones defeats a MW or Heavy he should get as much acclaimations as Andy cuz Dana will settle his opinion of what a P4P Best fighter is when he says “Anderson fought at 205 and beat guys there plus his reign at 185 never losing in the UFC”  That does deserve some merit and respect however at 205 he fought James Irving who was a good striker and KO’d alot of opponents but wasnt elite to the point where he was a serious contender at 205 belt & Forresst Griffin who deserves the respect from fans and fellow fighters for his not caring style to plain ol’ brawl his way to wins but it caught up to him and at that point when they fought he wasnt the elite fighter at 205 either.  It’s kinda like if Jones fought some middle of the pack Heavyweights and won impressively but didnt fight top contenders or former champions who were still in the title hunt and showing they could still capture the belt and hold it.  Jones is already creeping up to them (meaning GSP & Silva) in the rankings for best fighter at any weight, plus Jose Aldo, Frankie Edgar & Dominick Cruz or Urijah.  But GSP has been the champ and on top of his division longer than Bones & Silva has done the unthinkable by not losing ever inside the UFC and by his performances against some really good fighters you can kinda dismiss the fact that his division didnt have as much to offer him in contenders as 170 or any other weight class.  But lets face it if the debate really comes down to Anderson beating Irvin & Forrest , that means Jones is only two or one fight away from that spot when he moves up to Heavy and defeats a good solid Heavyweight who would be compared to Forrest or better.  Also he has to hold onto his belt at 205 before that day comes and that means getting past Evans, Hendo, and whomever becomes a credible challenger to his belt.  Anderson still does have some challengers yet to make it far enough to even get in the octagon with him to get a shot at taking that belt away from him and that has helped him. Yes Hendo was a tough challenge but he escaped the rematch when Dana didnt wanna pay him his due and he left for Strikeforce, Belfort was a challenge and still could make a go for another shot at Silva, Marquardt was a good challenge but looked better after that fight and looked to make another run at it when he then got the boot and dropped to 170, Okami was supposed to be one challenger who slipped away then finally got his shot after deserving it for awhile but couldnt hack it against da Spider. My point is Anderson is a product of his weak division and circumstances resulting in him not facing the absolute best opponents he could of been fighting- Leites, Lutter, Maia, & Patrick Cote - they dont match up to what Jones has faced while he is champ.  But after a while Jones will hafta make a decision to move up and face new challenges & do what Silva hasnt and face elite fighters up a division or do what Silva hasnt and face the challengers who he has already beaten and try to do it twice which is hard.  Silva will have his chance now with Chael but after that then what ?  Bisping maybe, Munoz ? , Chris Weidman only if Silva sticks around long enuff to allow Chris to grow and get better and seasoned enough to challenge him the most he can, or Belfort agian, Okami again, Maia again, Hendo again ?  I would rather see Bones vs Silva than GSP cuz of the closer weight disparity and skills of Jones plus his reach and similiar characteristics of both fighters.  Jones better campaign soon or else we could very well see Anderson retire if he thinks he can only fight at 185 when he really doesnt have anything else to prove there – thus lets make it easier for him to step up and fight Jones – make it a cathweight fight or a champ vs champ where if Silva wins he can still fight at his weight class in 185.  Dont let him get away with the excuse of Machida, Lil Nog, and Feijao who fights in Strikeforce and all his teamates at 205 are not deserving of a title shot or the opportunity as he is !!!  Maybe let Lil Nog get his chance and after he loses against Bones then make Silva taket he fight cuz his teamates are no longer in the hunt. Plus 185 would be better with out him as the competition would be closer and more competitve fights meaning the title could change hands and more matchups that never happend would then come to fruition. GSP has Diaz, Condit, Ellenberger, McDonald, Hathaway, etc,  Jones has fewer ,and Silva has even fewer than Jones so it makes much more sense for those two to fight each other.

lets not forget that jones has only been around for a short time anything can happen in mma he could get ko’d by rashad (not saying that’s what I think will happen) and that immediately puts him way behind silva, he has to stand the test of time, no doubt jones has had the most impressive year of fighting in ufc history but silva has been undefeated since 2006. As for a jones vs silva fight we have to remember jones is reaching his physical peak and anderson is getting quite old as far as fighters go so even if jones were to beat him there’d still be the question as to whether he’d beat an anderson in his prime. Really as fans what we should want is for Anderson to fight chael maybe one more contender then finish with two superfights first GSP then Jones. And if he were to win those fights that would basically cement himself as the Ali or Jordan the messiah of mma. Personally I think he will beat chael and give GSP a pounding the jones fight would be very interesting though, I think it’d be a very close fight jones would want to get it straight to the ground, machida hurt him and he was visibly tentative if he does that against silva he will get knocked out for sure also with silva’s muay thai he can punish jon’s absurdly skinny legs (I’ve never seen legs that thin on a fighter) I give silva a clear standup advantage and jones the wrestling advantage, not jiu jitsu I don’t see him submitting anderson but GnP for sure is the key for him in that fight. sadly only the chael fight will probably happen though i’m pumped for that anyway. By the way these superfights don’t really prove anything as far as pound for pound goes in my opinion unless the smaller guy does really well, otherwise it just proves why we have weight classes in the first place. and I don’t buy into the theory people have that jones and silva are closer in weight than silva and gsp jones couldn’t get down and fight middleweight but silva can and has gone down to 170. people get confused by silva’s walk around weight and his fighting weight when he steps into the octagon.
