Don’t think for a second that Cain Velasquez would stand in the way of Frank Mir replacing Alistair Overeem at UFC 146.
While we’ll know for sure later this month Overeem’s status for his planned UFC heavyweight title fight with Junior dos Santos in May.
Velasquez, a former champion like Mir, is currently set to meet him in a No. 1 contender match on the card. However, rumors of Mir replacing Overeem have heated up, and Velasquez understands completely.
“I definitely think that’s fair,” said Velasquez, in a recent interview with MMA Junkie’s John Morgan. “He’s coming off a three-fight winning streak. Dos Santos beat me fair and square. If I had won the fight, then I’d be in the same position. If they lift him up, then yeah, I’d definitely be fine with that.”
Who Velasquez would face if Mir was pulled into the title match remains another mystery. We should know all of this for sure on April 24 when Overeem goes before the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
