Bellator Fighting Championships has been the home for two of the best non-UFC fighters in the world.
Current Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard and former Bellator lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez, however, are each nearing – or have reached – the end of their contracts with the fight promotion.
During a recent interview with MMA Junkie’s Dann Stupp and John Morgan following UFC 145, UFC president Dana White let it be know that his company does know who both men are.
I think Eddie Alvarez is a great fighter. You know us, man. We’re always looking to get the best fighters in the UFC. I like (Lombard). I like him a lot. So we’ll see what happens.
Lombard has already been offered a UFC contract according to Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney. Bellator, Rebney said recently, will make a decision matching the offer by the UFC in the near future. The Cuban-Australian fighter holds a 24-0-1 record in his last 25 fights and a 31-2-1 mark in his career.
Alvarez recently avenged a loss by stopping Shinya Aoki in the main event of Bellator 66. He is 23-3 in his career.
Both fighters could be the star of Bellator, or test themselves against some of the elite fighters in the world by joining the UFC. It will be interesting to see what happens with each in the coming days and months. A few potential matches – if they join Zuffa – would be Lombard vs. Anderson Silva, Lombard vs. Chael Sonnen, Alvarez vs. Frankie Edgar, Alvarez vs. Gilbert Melendez.
