The constant switching of heavyweights on the UFC 146 card continued Monday, as UFC president Dana White announced a new opponent for Roy Nelson.
Nelson, who was originally set to face Antonio Silva, will face Gabriel Gonzaga at the May 26 card from Las Vegas. White confirmed the new fight via his Twitter account.
All of these changes came about after Alistair Overeem was removed from the main event with Junior dos Santos for the UFC heavyweight title. Frank Mir took Overeem’s place, while Silva stepped in for Mir to meet Cain Velasquez. That left Nelson without an opponent for the all-heavyweight main card.
Gonzaga was the planned opponent for Shane Del Rosario on the same card. Now, it remains to be seen if Del Rosario will still make his UFC debut in May, or be placed on a later event.
Gonzaga (13-6) returned to the UFC after a year-plus away by defeating Edinaldo Oliveira via first round submission this past January. Nelson (16-7) has gone just 1-3 in his last four fights, including a decision defeat against Fabricio Werdum earlier this year.
