Ben Rothwell’s Future Plans Include Alistair Overeem, Becoming UFC Heavyweight Champion

Ben Rothwell earned the biggest win of his career last month when he knocked out Brendan Schaub. The victory helped keep him among the elite in the UFC, and vaulted him into a match with Travis Browne later the year.

Rothwell, however, isn’t just focused on Browne. No, he has his sights set on Alistair Overeem, the UFC heavyweight championship and more, as he told Sherdog Radio Network recently.

I’m willing to fight anyone the UFC wants me to fight. After (fighting Browne in August), I believe Alistair Overeem will be issued his license back December 27. That makes a perfect time for me to fight him New Year’s Eve, making me the No. 1 contender after I beat his (expletive) ass. I’m going to beat him and then I’m going to fight whoever the champion is after that. That is my plan. We’re going to see something that none of you thought was going to happen: Ben Rothwell become a contender and win the UFC belt and become the champion that this sport deserves.

Rothwell will first have to get past Browne when the two collide on August 4 at UFC on FOX 4. Browne is undefeated, including a recent win over Chad Griggs.
