Dana White Confirms He Tried To Do Gilbert Melendez-B.J. Penn Fight

UFC president Dana White, in an interview with MMA Junkie following Thursday’s pre-fight press conference for UFC on FOX 3, confirmed that he did his best to get B.J. Penn and Gilbert Melendez inside the cage together.

I tried to do (Melendez vs. Penn), but it was at the same time when B.J. was like, ‘Yeah, I’m not fighting for a while.’ He wants to come back.

Instead, Melendez will defend his Strikeforce lightweight title against Josh Thomson in a third fight between the two on May 19.

White added that he would let Penn decide where he wants to fight if/when he comes back, but “The Prodigy” continues to remain stead-fast in retirement.

Well at least we know its an option

Personally, I don’t think Penn could hang with Melendez….especially after his performance against Diaz. Maybe I’m wrong, and I am a huge BJ fan!

When it comes to BJ it’s just a matter of how much effort he puts in the gym before the fight.

agreed, if he puts in the time, not many people at LW can hang with him.  BJ with cardio is a scary thing at LW.
