UFC president Dana White, in an interview with MMA Junkie following Thursday’s pre-fight press conference for UFC on FOX 3, confirmed that he did his best to get B.J. Penn and Gilbert Melendez inside the cage together.
I tried to do (Melendez vs. Penn), but it was at the same time when B.J. was like, ‘Yeah, I’m not fighting for a while.’ He wants to come back.
Instead, Melendez will defend his Strikeforce lightweight title against Josh Thomson in a third fight between the two on May 19.
White added that he would let Penn decide where he wants to fight if/when he comes back, but “The Prodigy” continues to remain stead-fast in retirement.
