Many figured Chael Sonnen would have been the happiest man on the planet when word came out that his planned rematch with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva for Brazil was being moved to the U.S.
However, as he told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour recently, the out-spoken Sonnen was not pleased by the decision.
“Yeah, I would’ve liked to have been part of a stadium show, a record-breaker. I would’ve definitely enjoyed the experience of walking into a hostile environment. I like that. I really enjoy the negative energy.”
Sonnen made sure to add that he isn’t completely shattered, just ready to take advantage of the opportunity to face Silva.
The two are set to collide in the main event of UFC 148 from Las Vegas on July 7. Several issues caused the change from Brazil and UFC 147, but Sonnen did get the chance to travel to South America for a press conference, which he enjoyed.
“As far as the people, it was great. Look, if I want to be famous in America, I’ve got to go to a fight. Walking around town, I’m just not. I’m not a celebrity, as you put it earlier. But in Brazil, everybody knows the sport.”
