MMAConvert’s May 2012 Rankings: The Smaller Weight Classes Get A Bit Of A Makeover

Following an interesting April and early May series of fight cards, it’s time to look at what changes, if any, were made in the top 10 rankings in each division.

Of course, these are not anyone’s personal rankings. They are compiled rankings from our staff and do not mirror any one member’s list. Our rankings are heavily based on the fighters’ more recent performances, the strength of their competition and the relevancy of those fights, not who we think could beat who or where we think they would fit in if they were in any other division.

As always, our rankings can easily be referenced on our dedicated rankings page.

Despite the UFC 145 headliner between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans, and the slight shift in the heavyweight landscape, the pound for pound, heavyweight, and middleweight divisions top 10 rankings were unchanged over the month.

Following his loss to 205 pound champ Jon Jones, Rashad Evans has dropped a spot, moving down to #3, making room for now #1 contender Dan Henderson to take the #2 spot.

Johny Hendricks moves up one spot in the welterweight division following his victory over Josh Koscheck, who moves down one spot. Martin Kampmann is now slightly ahead of Koscheck following the shift. In a move expected to stir up a debate Nick Diaz drops to #4 due to his own inactivity during his suspension, and Hendrick’s impressive win. Rory MacDonald cracks the welterweight top 10 following his win over Che Mills, while Jake Shields falls out of the top 10 welterweight rankings as he pursues a career at 185.

In the lightweight division, Nate Diaz jumps from the sixth spot to the fourth spot, following his impressive win over Jim Miller, who drops one. Also dropping is Anthony Pettis, through no fault of his own, Nate’s performance was impressive enough to put him slightly ahead of Pettis. Eddie Alvarez cracks the top 10 following his victory over Shinya Aoki in Bellator. Clay Guida drops down one to make room for Eddie, and Edson Barboza slips to 11, though with his upcoming bout, that could easily change.

In the 145 pound division, Denis Siver takes the 10th spot in the division following his win over Diego Nunes, while Nunes falls to #11. Moving up slightly are Chan Sung Jung and Erik Koch, following Nunes ejection.

The largest jump comes in the Bantamweight division, as Michael McDonald, who may be on the cusp of a title shot, leaps into the top five following his knockout victory over Miguel Torres, who falls out of the top 10 for the first time in recent memory. Eduardo Dantas jumps to the #7 spot following his definitive victory over Zach Makovsky, and rounding out the top 10 is new addition Brad Pickett.

Lastly, there are minor changes to the flyweight division, as Louis Gaudinot and John Dodson move up slightly following their UFC on FOX 3 victories, though the top six in the division remain the same.
