Junior Dos Santos Proves His Championship-Worth In Defense Over Frank Mir

Junior dos Santos came to UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Mir with one objective: to defend his UFC heavyweight title against Frank Mir.

Behind a barrage of well-placed punches, dos Santos did that Saturday night, exiting the arena as the UFC heavyweight champion.

In an earlier interview when he was asked how the bout would end, “Cigano” said by second round knockout. Well, that is exactly what happened inside the MGM Grand.

“I told you second round knockout,” said dos Santos, during the post-fight interview on FUEL TV. “He tried to submit me, but I did a good defense. I wanted to make him tired in the first round so I could knock him out in the second. I’m very confident with my hands and I wanted to beat him.”

Mir owns two victories over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, the mentor for dos Santos, but that had nothing to do with this defense, he said.

Dos Santos was surprised by how many of his shots Mir withstood, adding, “He could take a punch. He survived a little bit, but not much.”

When asked about a possible rematch with Cain Velasquez – dos Santos claimed the title last November over Velasquez on the first FOX show – JDS said, “If the UFC wants to see that fight again, I’ll do it.” Velasquez defeated Antonio Silva in the co-main event Saturday.
